Carling Ruse
Born into a family of musicians, and formerly a member of her school’s band, San Jose-based Carla Villescaz began experimenting with production in high school. Inspired by her father, a jazz drummer, and fueled by a self-described “deep connection with music,” Villescaz began producing under the Carling Ruse moniker in 2011, creating R&B-flavored trap beats with a feminine sound. Infamous for her chopped sampling of Destiny’s Child vocals on more than one occasion, Carling Ruse gained early notoriety for her interpretation of their 2004 hit Cater 2 U – a rework that garnered even more attention upon its re-release in a Bandcamp edition that pitted Virginia-based producer Ruddyp’s version against hers. A regular contributor to Sunday Records, the independent label run by Australian producer Ta-Ku, Carling’s debut EP is set to release this year.
Opening with Aurora by Oslo’s Cashmere Cat, Carling Ruse’s exclusive mix for SSENSE features her own rework of DE$IGNATED’s Valentine, plus bootlegs from Ruddyp, Sweater Beats, Ta-Ku, and Blackbird Blackbird.
